Reading and Phonics

Phonics

At Aston Fence Junior and Infant School, we teach phonics through a scheme called Little Wandle Letters and Sounds Revised. This is a complete systematic synthetic phonics programme (SSP) developed for schools by schools. It is based on the original Letters and Sounds, but has been extensively revised to provide a complete teaching programme which meets all the expectations of the National Curriculum.

Phonics is taught daily for children working at Phases 1 – 5.

The resources on this page will help you support your child with saying their phonemes (sounds) and writing their graphemes (letters). There are also useful videos so you can see how your child is taught at school so that you can  confidently support their reading at home.

We have many approaches to teaching children both to read and to enjoy reading.  These include:

  • Hearing children read,

  • Completing regular reading comprehension lessons to develop skills at all key stages,

  • Sharing books in differentiated groups,

  • Letters and Sounds, currently taught in FS2 and KS1 and is developed in KS2,

  • Quiet, independent reading timetabled regularly

  • Class story timetabled regularly,

  • Better Reading, Herts for Learning, Fischer Family Trust Wave 3 Literacy intervention and Reading Rescue implemented for children who need them, and many more.

Reading is recorded on individual record sheets and in children’s own Reading Record Books.  If you wish to know more about how reading is taught in your child’s class, we have a more detailed breakdown of different year group approaches in school.

Our reading schemes are: Oxford Reading Tree, Phonics Bug (published by Pearson) and Phonics Club (published by Pearson).
